As a photographer, I recently had the pleasure of capturing the magic of true witches in a captivating woodland session. In this blog post, we’ll explore just a few enchanting witch photoshoot outfit ideas, as well as the ethereal photos from my woodland session photoshoot in 2023. Read to the end to see the gallery of images we captured and possible provide some photoshoot ideas.
Location Ideas and What to Look For
When planning a witchy woodland photoshoot, the location sets the stage for enchantment. Generally locations with a mix of shadowy areas and muted colours is best. Look for:
- Local trails and paths: Tall trees and organic setting help to create that creepy, earthy feel. Fallen logs and stumps also provide great spots to create more dynamic poses.
Old Houses or Structures: Create an eerie and mysterious atmosphere with the haunting backdrop of old houses.
Wild fields in the Fall: Autumn landscapes with decay and fallen leaves, offer a blank slate to create a dramatic yet moody scene.
Witch Costume Ideas
There are many different interpretations of what a witch looks like. The perfect look is simply the one that feels good to you and that you can have the most fun with! Here are just a few good witch costume ideas.
The Movie Witch
Think the “Wizard of Oz” and the “Wicked Witch of the West”. A purple dress and a pointy hat set the foundation for a spellbinding look. Channel the classic character with a modern twist. A black cape, leather jacket, and a wide-brimmed hat add a stylish edge to the classic Wicked Witch of the West look. This is typically the classic witch costume we see on Halloween night.
Teenage Witch Whimsy:
This one pulls inspiration from more modern witch archetypes, like “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”. This is a cute-not-scary witch costume. A simple black dress, a cute witch hat, and pink feathers create a whimsical look perfect for young enchantresses.
Goth or Ethereal Witch
his is my personal favourite for photoshoots. Imaging a old wise woman, with long untamed hair, a flowy gown with a little lace and a velvet cape. There may be a touch of dark magic, but overall this is a more elegant yet powerful look. Whether it is a floor-length black gown or an antique nightgown, costumes that involve lots of fabric help to create movement and variation in the photos.
Makeup
Much like the clothing options, the sky’s the limit when it comes to make-up. Here are a few options that will go beyond just the basic witch look.
Unnatural Skin Tones
Elevate your witchy look with green face paint, adding an otherworldly touch to your enchanting appearance. For a mystical vibe, incorporate purple body makeup to create an enchanting and magical aura.
Red Gloves and Lipstick
Add a pop of color with red gloves and lipstick, creating a bold, captivating and even seductive contrast against darker costume elements.
Goth or Ethereal
Play with pale foundations to create a witchy look, where it is like you have not seen the sun in years. Add dark smoky eye shadow and a purple or black lipstick to enhance this high contrast look. Swap out the dark lipstick for a nude or pale pink and transform into a more ethereal look.
Props and Accessories
Using props in your photoshoot can help to make each shot more dynamic and bring more to the storytelling.
Crystal Ball
Enchant the scene with a crystal ball prop, capturing the timeless and mystical essence of witchcraft.
Smoke Bombs
Add an ethereal touch to your photoshoot with smoke bombs, creating an enchanting colourful atmosphere that adds depth and mystery.
Broomstick
Complete your witchy look with a broomstick, a symbol of classic witchcraft that adds authenticity to your photos.
Wide-Brimmed Hat
Embrace the classic witch aesthetic with a wide-brimmed hat, adding a timeless and sophisticated touch to your overall look.
Full-Length Cloak
Create a sense of drama and elegance with a full-length cloak, perfect for capturing the enchantment of the woodlands.
Sheets & Scarves
Flowy white sheets create are more gauzy, ghostly look.
Fallen Branches and Sticks
The natural shapes of the branches and sticks can be transformed into other elements. A wooden wand, like in Harry Potter, adds a hint of magic. A long branch could be come a staff or scepter for your witch character to hold.
The Final Look
As the final look comes together in the woodland photoshoot, the combination of costume elements, makeup, and carefully chosen props creates a visual narrative that captures the essence of true witches. From the spooky season ambiance of old abandoned houses to the whimsical charm of gingerbread cottages, each photo tells a unique story of magic and enchantment.
In the Fall of 2023, my friend Tara and I set out to do our very own woodland witch photoshoot in the Blue Mountains. Our location was the wooded trail of the Clendenan Conservation area. With lots of mature trees, winding paths and fallen branches, it provided the perfect scene for our shoot. Going for a more ethereal witch look, Tara paired her vintage nightgown with more gothic makeup look. She channeled her inner witch, which allowed us to create several dynamic shots with movement. We took some liberties and injected some personal style by adding a floral crown to the look. The flowy fabrics and the shadows created by the trees definitely enhanced the eerie, spooky vibe! Tara is a crocheter, so it was only fitting that our witch could be found crocheting a black witch hat.
In the enchanting landscapes and scenery, witches come to life, weaving their magic into the very fabric of the woodland setting. Embrace your inner enchantress, bring your witchy visions to life, and let the photoshoot unfold as a captivating journey into the mystical world of witches. It’s time to create spellbinding memories in the heart of nature’s enchantment.
