Capturing Family Memories in Style: What to Wear for Your Photoshoot
As a family photographer based in the Blue Mountains, Ontario, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing families come together to create beautiful memories through my lens. One of the most common questions I get asked is, “What should we wear for our family photoshoot?” Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in the final images, ensuring that they are not only timeless but also a true reflection of your family’s personality and style.
The Importance of Clothing Choices
Your clothing choices play a significant role in the overall aesthetic of your family portraits. They set the tone for the session, complementing the natural beauty of The Blue Mountains while allowing your family members to shine. Here are some top tips to help you navigate the world of family photo shoot outfits:
1. Consider the Time of Year:
The Blue Mountains offer diverse landscapes and weather conditions. Be mindful of the season and choose outfits that are not only stylish but also weather-appropriate. Whether you’re opting for an outdoor session amidst the vibrant fall foliage or a winter wonderland shoot, dress accordingly to stay comfortable and look fabulous.
For a winter session, bundle up. You might choose to wear winter coats in your photos, but if you choose to pose in lighter clothing to create a certain aesthetic, be sure to come prepared. If you and your kids get cold, not only will everyone look stiff and uncomfortable in the images, but everyone will have rosy cheek and red noses. Although, you might choose to leave your hat off if you have done your hair nicely, I recommend wearing a warm jacket, a scarf and some gloves while waiting to take the shot. Even a blanket is nice to wrap around your shoulders and cozy up with your family members.
2. Dress for the Location:
If you’re having an outdoor session, think about the terrain. Long flowy dresses may work well in a field, while a more casual look with a pair of jeans might be perfect for a forest setting. Dressing appropriately for the location enhances the overall aesthetic of your photos. For outdoor sessions, it is really important to consider the terrain of your location. If you are hiking to a location or in a field, consider wearing sturdy shoes to get to the location, then changing into your preferred shoes there. Trust me, the last thing we need during a family photo session is a sprained ankle.
3. Create a Color Palette:
Start by creating a color palette for your family’s outfits. This doesn’t mean everyone has to wear the same thing, but choosing a cohesive color scheme can enhance the overall look of the photos. Consider earthy tones for a more organic feel, or go for bold colors to make a statement against the serene backdrop. My recommendation is to choose one statement colour. Coordinate but don’t match. Have each family member wear that colour as a solid or as part of a patterned clothing item, and then balance their outfits with neutrals (i.e. black, white, tan, brown, khaki, navy and or denim). You can also consider adding a pop of colour through accessories like scarves, hats, or statement jewelry. This can bring vibrancy to the photos without making the picture all about the colour and less about your family.
4. Avoid Busy Patterns:
While patterns can add interest to an outfit, busy patterns can be distracting in photographs. Instead, opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that won’t overpower the image. This is especially important for family portraits where you want the focus to be on the connection between family members.
5. Consider Your Personal Style:
Your family photos should be a reflection of who you are. Don’t be afraid to showcase your personal style. Whether it’s a more casual look with everyone in jeans and soft blues or a dressier ensemble with earthy tones, let your outfits tell your family’s unique story.
6. Avoid Overly Trendy Outfits:
While it’s great to incorporate current fashion trends, be cautious not to go overboard. Stick to classic and timeless pieces that won’t look outdated in a few years. This ensures that your family portraits remain relevant and cherished for years to come.
7. Multiple Outfits for Variety:
If time allows, consider bringing different outfits for a bit of variety in your photos. This is particularly useful for longer sessions or if you’re changing locations. It allows you to have a diverse set of images that capture different aspects of your family’s dynamic.
8. Comfort is Key:
Ensure that everyone is comfortable in their chosen outfits. This is especially important for children, who may become restless if their clothes are too restrictive. Comfortable family members are more likely to be relaxed and genuinely enjoy the session. It is always a good idea to choose clothing that fit properly and that you can move around in.
9. Check The Details
Although, yes, there is a lot that can be done to fix problems in photos in photoshop, it is always best to get it right in the shot in the first place. Be sure to iron your clothing beforehand, and use a lint roller to get rid of any animal hair or fluffs.
Pulling It All Together
To make the process of choosing outfits for your family photoshoot in The Blue Mountains a breeze, start by creating a Pinterest board. Pin your favorite outfit ideas, color schemes, and styles that resonate with your family’s personality. Use it as a visual guide to ensure a cohesive look that reflects your unique story.
Remember, the most important thing is to be yourselves and have fun during the session. Whether you’re barefoot in the living room or sporting high heels in a picturesque outdoor location, let your family’s personality shine through. By following these top tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating stunning and meaningful family portraits that will be cherished for generations to come.
